Coswin under implementation at Africa’s largest hydropower project
Siveco Group’s CMMS Coswin 7i was selected to manage the maintenance of the Merowe hydropower plant in Sudan. Coswin was primarily chosen for its flexibility, most notably its easy-to-customize user interface.
The largest hydropower project currently under construction in Africa, the Merowe Dam Project is a multi-purpose infrastructure project located on the River Nile and provides energy, water for irrigation and flood protection. The Merowe dam, with its peak output of 1,250 MW, will almost double Sudan’s electrical power generation capacity once it comes online. In addition some 400,000 ha of agricultural land can be irrigated through the stored water. The dam is located near Merowe city, 350 km to the north of Khartoum.

The main contractor for the project is China International Water and Electric Corporation (www.cwe.cn). Alstom Power (www.power.alstom.com), the energy division of engineering giant Alstom, supplies the ten 125 MW hydro turbines and generators, the balance of plant, control system and engineering. German engineering firm Lahmeyer International provides design and construction management services for the project.
Bruno Lhopiteau, General Manager of Siveco China, said “This contract demonstrates once again the perfect complementarily between our maintenance offering and the needs of Chinese construction companies involved in export projects”.
Historically the largest player in the African CMMS market, Siveco has become, in the past few years, the leading maintenance consultancy in China, working alongside engineering companies and major equipment suppliers during the construction phase of industrial and infrastructure projects, in order to prepare the maintenance phase through the implementation of the CMMS.
