Hong Kong's largest landfill selects Siveco for ISO 55000-compliant Asset Management System

2017-12-05
SUEZ NWS, the operator of the West New Territories (WENT) strategic landfill, selected Siveco to implement a sustainable Asset Management system compliant with the ISO 55000 standard, based on Siveco's Coswin 8i solution. The project has already started.

In 1993, SITA Waste Services, a subsidiary of environmental giant Suez, was contracted by the Hong Kong Government to design, build, operate and restore the West New Territories (WENT) Landfill, a state-of-the-art containment landfill with a 60 million m3 waste capacity over 25 years. It is Hong Kong's largest disposal facility.

Occupying a 250 ha site at Nim Wan, Tuen Mun, it is currently accepting 9000 tonnes/day of municipal, commercial, and industrial waste.

There are some unique features of the design and operation:

  • Marine reception area for offloading containerised waste delivered by ships from Hong Kong's municipal transfer station network;
  • A multi-stage leachate treatment process utilising recycled stream water to generate boiler grade water for heating leachate prior to ammonia stripping. Off gases are treated by utilising landfill gas powered Thermal Destructors. Once the ammonia load has been removed, further traditional biological treatment to remove COD via extended aeration lagoons is undertaken to produce up to 2900 m3/day effluent complying with the Government's Effluent Discharge standards;
  • The landfill gas is collected and utilised to generate energy via a 2.6MW site power station which provides sufficient power for WENT's needs.
